Free chicken for a year? Joella’s Hot Chicken is opening its second Pinellas store

The budding hot chicken chain will award the first 100 people in line free chicken for a year, something Chick-fil-A has been doing to attract guests for years.

SEMINOLE — Joella’s Hot Chicken, a Louisville fast-casual chain, will open a second restaurant in the Tampa Bay area next week, less than a month after its first-ever Florida store opened in Pinellas County.

For those who tried, and failed, to score free chicken for a year by being among the first 100 in line at Joella’s Largo opening Sept. 20, you’ll have another chance at the new Seminole store on Oct. 3. The restaurant chain expects people to begin lining up outside the store at 7893 113th Street as early as the morning before.

It appears the budding Kentucky chain has taken a page from the Chick-fil-A playbook, which has a similar promotion that encourages patrons to camp out with tents before a store opening to be awarded free chicken for a year.

Joella’s announced earlier this year it would would open nine new stores throughout Georgia, Florida, Indiana and Ohio, bringing its total footprint to 17 locations. The next Florida location is slated to open soon in Melbourne.

Joella’s, which was founded in 2015, serves tenders, wings and chicken and waffles, with six levels of heat.

The Oct. 3 ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The first 100 people in line will be awarded their free chicken at 8 a.m.
