Publix opens new Brandon store in former Walmart space

Meanwhile in Tampa, the Westshore store could open soon.

BRANDON — The newest Publix has opened inside the Bloomingdale Square shopping plaza, neighboring its former location which closed on Wednesday.

The new Brandon Publix at 949 E Bloomingdale Ave. opened to shoppers on 7 a.m. Thursday. The property is owned by Jacksonville-based developer Regency Center. The new 48,387-square-foot Publix sits in place of an old Walmart store. The store is Publix’s newest model and layout. It also has an adjacent Publix liquor store.

The old Publix space in the same plaza will be turned into an LA Fitness, according to Regency’s redevelopment plans.

Meanwhile, Publix spokesman Brian West said the grocer’s West Shore location at 4900 W Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa is “on track to open in the next several weeks.”
