We thought we were going to be telling you about the best ways to attract and retain top talent during a tight labor market, with examples of companies doing it best. About a month ago, that still seemed like a solid and timely idea.
Florida and Tampa Bay were enjoying the lowest unemployment numbers on record. Employers were telling us they were having trouble filling certain in-demand positions. Just a few weeks back.
Then came the coronavirus outbreak, followed by businesses curtailing hours then closing indefinitely to keep people from congregating. That was quickly followed by furloughs and outright layoffs. Many of us lucky enough to still have a job are working from home while others tough it out at their office or store, Clorox wipes at the ready.
Someday this will pass, ideally sooner than later. Employers will begin rehiring, maybe even thinking about some lessons learned, though who could have imagined the screeching halt brought to the national economy?
Hopefully these rankings, and the stories that accompany them, offer some inspiration for when it comes time to resume normal business operations.
Back in September, we put out the first call for nominations for the Tampa Bay Times Top 100 Workplaces of 2020. This is the start of our second decade doing this.
We surveyed thousands of employees. We asked them a series of questions about their employers, about leadership and pay and workplace culture. Their answers were the sole drivers of our rankings, generated by our survey partner Energage. We grouped companies by their size

It’s important to know that we don’t charge any company to participate or publicize their Top Workplace designation, like so many of these best-of undertakings. Its our way of giving you a glimpse inside some businesses that employees say are great places to work. Isn’t that the best endorsement?
It’s also an inexpensive way for companies to get some detailed feedback on the sort of workplaces they operate. Please consider nominating your employer next year.
Join me in congratulating this year’s winners.
And stay safe.
