Fans of the great outdoors are about to get a new shopping paradise in Tampa.
Tampa Bay’s first REI Co-op store will open Friday in the Midtown Tampa development, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Thursday.
The 23,000-square-foot store is a much-anticipated anchor for the $500-plus million Midtown Tampa development just south of Interstate 275 off Dale Mabry Highway. It will be the fifth REI store in Florida, following locations in Jacksonville, Winter Park, Gainesville and Boca Raton, and will employ 52 workers.
“We are thrilled to join the community in Tampa and to better connect our local members to the places and activities they love,” Cindy Smith, manager of REI’s Tampa store, said in a statement. “Whether trying paddling for the first time or heading out on a familiar trail, we’ll have the gear and expertise our members need to get outside.”
For the time being, REI will implement capacity restrictions and require face masks for shoppers in Tampa. Shoppers may be asked to queue up outside in order to ensure proper social distancing measures.
The store, located at 1152 Assembly Drive, will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. For information, see rei.com/tampa.
