Enhanced Nebraska Mini-Mart is back in Seminole Heights

Many of Seminole Heights new businesses have built on the district’s historic roots and traditions.

Rooster & the Till co-owners Ferrell Alvarez and Ty Rodriguez had that idea in mind when they revamped their newest concept, Nebraska Mini-Mart, which was previously abandoned and reopened last month at 4815 N Nebraska Ave.

Alvarez says its old school effect and architecture originally attracted them to the site and they wanted to pay homage to the old school mini-mart it used to be in the 1950s.

Some things of the past remain the same like the popular drive-through beverage stand where they call guests by name through the pick-up window, but Rodriguez and Alvarez also added a few things to cultivate a hip, outdoor hang out spot for Seminole Heights residents.

The additions include shuffleboard, a ping pong table, bocce courts and bleachers for guests to drink and eat its street food offerings such as the Korean style cheesesteak, confit chicken wings with a Malaysian chili paste, pig mac, or vegetarian tempura fried oyster mushrooms served with a bloomin onion sauce.

After two years in the making and now three weeks in business, co-owner Ferrell Alvarez says he’s happy with the thriving business while looking to keep patrons satisfied.

"The restaurant itself is great and going really well," he said.

"We’re very humbled by the turnout and the support. Now we’re retooling food and drinks options and may bring in more healthy food options to diversify it more. Since we’re open for lunch we need to have something lighter and more healthier options opposed to fast, tasty and heavy bar food."

The mini-mart’s outdoor presence presents one of the biggest challenges as the owners look to sustain business even when weather fails.

"It’s definitely a hindrance when it rains, we knew that going into it, but we do have indoor seating and covered outdoor seating," Alvarez said.

"We want to look into some shade options, climate control options for the outdoor yard during this winter in preparation for next summer."

Until then, the restaurant will focus on offering fresh and creative homemade entrees, and fun cocktails and beverages. Its food offering range from $5 to $10 and beverages range from $4 to $12. Nebraska Mini-Mart operates six days a week from noon to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from noon to midnight Friday and Saturday and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
