Frontier Communications on Tuesday announced a new 1-gigabit service, with what executive vice president John Maduri described as "eye-popping" speed for the home, in its FiOS markets.

The company also is increasing its introductory consumer broadband offer to 200 megabits per second, whether downloading or uploading. In an email, Frontier spokesman Bob Elek said that is the fastest introductory service for the price ($50 for standalone internet service, $60 for broadband and telephone and $90 for a package of internet, telephone and cable television service). The pricing is the same with or without a contract.

Frontier also is introducing its Wi-Fi EveryWare program to address coverage and performance challenges faced by Wi-Fi users at home. With new broadband installations, the EveryWare service will include a signal-strength analysis to improve the customer experience and provide a better guide to technical support if Wi-Fi issues arise. Wi-Fi EveryWare extenders are available to the consumer if needed and will work with the router to improve coverage. Frontier Wi-Fi EveryWare comes at no charge for new customers taking the current offer for one year.

Frontier's all-fiber FiOS network is available to approximately 1.4 million households and gigabit service is available to more than 500,000 households in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Frontier has been locked in a long battle for Tampa Bay customers with cable rival Charter Communications' Spectrum and streaming services.
