CARROLLWOOD — Jim Chambers has an extensive background in the music and entertainment industry, working with numerous artists such as Dave Matthews and Maroon 5.

In 2009, the three-time Grammy Award-winner left New York City and the corporate world behind, returning to Tampa. Chambers embarked on a new journey to share his experience and passion with the next generation of musicians.

"That's why I'm here," Chambers said. "I decided to give it all back to the young people so they can carry on what I've learned."

Initially, Chambers started teaching drum lessons at the Carrollwood Cultural Center and this led to private lessons.

"It brought me the same thrill as breaking an artist on the radio," Chambers said.

As his clientele grew, he rented a dedicated space for lessons, but after a year and a half, Chambers was forced to relocate. After raising more than $20,000 in a kickstarter campaign, he opened Jim Chambers Music Box where he has been for the past three years.

Jim Chambers Music Box offers lessons for piano, voice, guitar, violin, banjo, ukulele, and drums. In addition, Chambers is heavily involved in managing four bands at his studio.

"We have a robust band formation program," said Chambers, owner.

In September, Chambers plans to debut a new area called the Shine Box.

"We'll erect a stage, lighting, full PA," said Chambers. "It'll be a fully functioning new music venue for Tampa. It'll be premier."

An open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday (July 28). The event is free and family friendly.

Jim Chambers Music Box is at 4321 Gunn Highway. For more information, call (917) 319-8815, or visit jcmusicbox.com.
