CLEARWATER — St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport on Monday announced its biggest August in history, with 178,962 passengers, 14 percent more than 2017.

So far this year, the airport has seen 1,585,711 passengers. That’s 12 percent more than last year, when the airport surpassed the 2 million passenger mark for the first time. The airport is on a pace for to mark its sixth straight year of double-digit passenger growth and its fourth consecutive record year.

The increase in August came as the airport welcomed news of new flights by Allegiant , which launches nonstops to Albany, N.Y. on Dec. 12, and new low-cost Canadian airline Flair, with new nonstops to Winnipeg, the capital of and largest city in the Canadian province of Manitoba, beginning Dec. 15.

And the growth is taking place as airport parking is squeezed by construction both on the airport’s property and off, with the Gateway Express Project underway. Inside the terminal, gate Nos. 7 through 10 are also undergoing renovations.
