CLEARWATER — With passenger traffic picking up on Monday and expected to stay strong through Dec. 29, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport says it could run out of parking spaces, so passengers should consider making arrangements to be dropped off or picked up at the airport.
Over the past two years, the airport expanded its long-term and economy parking from 1,172 to 2,171 spaces. Also, a new cell phone lot has been opened to help ease alleviate curbside congestion. And additional parking is planned to be added in 2018.
Now, however, the airport is in its fifth straight year of double-digit growth and is on a pace to see a record 2 million-plus passengers. At Thanksgiving, the airport saw its highest-ever demand for parking and came close to reaching capacity. Demand is expected to be higher around the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
