Tampa International Airport gets $5.3 million grant for safety improvements

Tampa International Airport has received a $5.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for airfield upgrades, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, announced Wednesday.

The grant will allow the airport to add new energy-efficient directional LED signs and new markings on taxiways to improve safety, said airport spokeswoman Janet Zink.

"Infrastructure investments at the airport have put thousands of our local neighbors to work already. The new U.S. Department of Transportation grant will keep the momentum going and ensure that Tampa International Airport remains one of the best in the world," Castor said.

The Tampa airport is currently undergoing $957 million renovation, which includes adding a people mover train, the construction of a new rental car facility and a slew of new retailers and restaurants in terminals.
