Coupon insert RedPlum pulls out of Tampa Bay area newspapers

Coupon insert RedPlum will no longer be included in Sunday editions of the Tampa Bay Times and other local newspapers starting Sunday.

RedPlum owner Valassis Communications said it planned to use the mail to deliver its insert due to a dispute over the cost of folding the insert into newspapers, Times vice president of sales and marketing Bruce Faulmann said. The firm also said the Tampa Bay region had a high rate of coupon fraud, in which coupons are sold in bulk over online marketplaces like eBay.

"The company has made a business decision to shift availability of its RedPlum coupon booklet package from Tampa Bay area newspapers to our RedPlum mail package," Valassis said in a statement.

The Times will still run coupons, including Sunday coupon insert SmartSource, Faulmann said. The newspaper is negotiating with Valassis to return RedPlum into Sunday papers potentially as early as this fall.

"From a reader perspective, we know how important it is to deliver that value," Faulmann said. "They're a valued customer, and we look forward to them returning."
