Hurricane Irma triples October job cuts from a year ago

Hurricane Irma's ripple effects aren't over yet. Layoffs in Florida tripled in October from this time last year according to the latest Challenger, Gray & Christmas monthly job report released Thursday. Job cuts jumped from 561 eliminated positions the previous October to 2,363 positions last month.

What's more, layoffs since the beginning of the year are also higher than last year — 13,286 in 2017 compared with 11,169 in 2016.

That's in sharp contrast to a far sunnier national jobs report released Friday, which said that 261,000 jobs were added in October across the country. The national unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent, the lowest in about 17 years.
