The Florida Public Service Commission announced Tuesday it will be adding a new area code, 689, to Central Florida.
The new code will overlay the existing 407 area code that currently is in place for Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and parts of Lake and Volusia counties. However, it will only go into effect after current 407 numbers are exhausted, meaning only new phone numbers in the area will be assigned.
The addition is long overdue, according to the PSC, and is happening due to a high demand in new central Florida phone numbers.
The implementation of 689 was originally planned to take place in July 2002. Due to an "aggressive push for number conservation plans," however, the PSC delayed it for 16 years, according to a news release.
"We've extended use of the 407 area code for as long as possible, but all available numbers are expected to be assigned within the next year," PSC chairman Art Graham said in the release. "The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) can now begin processing the 689 area code for efficient implementation when needed."
