The Starbucks on Fourth Street N in downtown St. Petersburg was doling out free red plastic reusable cups on Friday as the coffee giant launched its holiday beverages.

Patrons who ordered "grande" (medium) holiday drinks — peppermint mocha-whatevers, gingerbread-what-cha-ma-call-its — are being gifted the red plastic cups, which also allow discounted refills for the rest of the holiday beverage season, while supplies last at participating stores.

Every year, a social media frenzy usually revolves around the so-called Red Cup Season. The designs this year feature holly leaves, green stars and red stripes. The holiday menu began today at 5:45 a.m.

Twitter this morning was filled with Starbucks diehards admitting they were waiting in crazy drive-through lines to grab eggnog lattes and a free cup.

The red cup offer means customers can bring the plastic cup back in store any day after 2 p.m. to score 50 cents off their holiday beverage order until Jan. 7.

Reminder: Halloween was just two days ago.
