Buddy Brew Coffee will open its newest location in Hyde Park Village on Saturday.
Owners Dave and Susan Ward held a pre-opening Wednesday morning to show off their new digs, which has black-and-white tile floors, a massive U-shaped white-speckled granite bar and a handful of tables.
"We wanted more interaction between people and the baristas, and more interaction between customers," Susan Ward said while sipping a cappuccino. "Bar seating was important."
The back wall of the store at first glance looks like a funky wallpaper of gray, loopy squiggles. The custom mural by Nashville artist Alic Daniel has the Buddy Brew logo "Brew good, do good" and other phrases and words within the doodles. The bathroom is decorated the same way, but with a blast of burnt orange and mustard yellow. There, the artist incorporated the names of Susan and Dave's family members.
Buddy Brew will open another location in Tampa International Airport's Airside F in July. Besides its main site on W Kennedy Boulevard in Tampa, the coffee roastery has cafes in Sarasota and at Oxford Exchange in Tampa.
The owners hope the Hyde Park location will alleviate some of the crowd from its bustling location on Kennedy, which is just a mile away.
This is the latest in a flood of store openings in Hyde Park Village, bought by Boston-based WS Development in 2013. Last month, the village welcomed Sprinkles Cupcakes, the California-based company famous for its cupcake ATM — a feature that has yet to be installed at the local storefront. London Philips, Florist Fire and Kendra Scott also recently opened. Also scheduled to open this year is the Meat Market restaurant, Suitsupply and Goody Goody.
