Primrose School coming to South Tampa; Doma moves to Gandy, replaced by Dwell; Repeat Performance has new owner

SOUTH TAMPA — Home furnishings store owner David King needed a bigger showroom for Doma, a collection of transitional to contemporary furniture, lighting, custom rugs and artwork, especially with the addition of a new line, Ekornes Stressless leather recliners, sofas and sectionals.

Moving to a Gandy Boulevard storefront just west of Dale Mabry Highway also added space to show off the work of local artists Don Kobasky and Marc Levasseur, among others, plus a selection of giclees, King said at the grand opening Saturday.

By year's end, King plans to expand into the adjacent 1,500-square-foot space. "To open an exclusive Italian furniture gallery, unnamed until we ink the deal," he said, noting that his original Doma store remains on 22nd Avenue N in St. Petersburg.

As for the vacated Doma showroom on S Dale Mabry near Plant High School, that will become Dwell Interiors Consignment on Nov. 1, selling gently used, high-end furniture, accessories and artwork.

"So many clients have furniture they can no longer use when we redecorate their homes," said King. "Dwell will facilitate one-stop convenience by picking up items, consigning it for them and splitting the sale 50-50."

Upholstery and framing services will also be offered, furthering the symbiotic relationship, says Dwell manager Tom Crider.

"If you like the piece but not the fabric or frame, we'll redo it for you." Design and estate services are available as well, he adds, "to help you clear out and redesign."

Primrose School will give info, vet teachers

Groundbreaking for a seventh Primrose School in the Tampa Bay area is a month away, and educational child care won't start until August 2013, but parents will soon be able to obtain registration information at the new Kennedy Boulevard site, just west of downtown Tampa.

In about six weeks, staffers will work from a trailer at the future campus to answer questions about programs for infants through age 12 "and to conduct interviews for degreed teachers," said Christy Radtke Blackard, director-partner of Primrose School of South Tampa.

Blackard welcomes parents to tour two other Primrose locations the family owns, in Tampa Palms and Cross Creek in New Tampa. Her parents, Jana and Rick Radtke, opened the first Primrose School in 1995 in Lewisville, Texas, to offer accredited private education through first grade and after-school activities for older children, including art, computers and Spanish.

Blackard projects enrollment of 300 children at the Kennedy Boulevard location, with a staff of 50 teachers and a full-time chef.

Designer consignment shop has new owner

Under new ownership, Repeat Performance consignment boutique continues to offer lightly worn designer fashions, featuring well-known labels like Gucci, Prada, Armani and St. John Knits, among many others. Women's clothing, jewelry, shoes and handbags (think Coach and Vuitton) may be consigned for 90 days. Sales are split 50-50 between the consignor and owner Karen Gurney.

"We cater to a very diverse group, all ages and fashion needs," said Gurney, who managed Ann Taylor stores in Hyde Park Village and International Plaza for a decade. She purchased Repeat Peformance from Brenda Williams, who opened at the apex of Henderson Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue in 1990.

Gurney hosts private parties for clients who invite friends and co-workers for refreshments and shopping for two hours after the store closes.

"They have so much fun," she said. "It's like shopping in a big, giant closet."
