DUNEDIN — A 79-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Friday after she was hit by a sport-utility vehicle while crossing a road, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Cecilia Dassie of Dunedin was crossing from south to north on San Christopher Drive just west of County Road 1 at about 6:50 p.m. She was not in the crosswalk, deputies said, and she was pulling a metal cart of groceries.

Edward Heilman, 37, also of Dunedin, was driving a 2007 Mercury Mariner north on County Road 1 and turned west onto San Christopher Drive, investigators said. That’s when the vehicle collided with Dassie.

Dassie was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

The crash was under investigation Friday. Deputies said it did not appear that speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
