CLEARWATER — A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard on Monday night, police said.

The crash occurred at 8:45 p.m. just west of Belcher Road. The pedestrian, who had not been in a crosswalk when he was hit by a sport-utility vehicle, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater police said. He later died there.

Police didn’t release the man’s name Tuesday because they were still trying to notify his family of his death.

The driver of the SUV, identified in arrest reports as Carson David Powell, 18, faces a misdemeanor charge of DUI, police said. An arrest report says Powell showed signs of impairment, that his breath smelled of cannabis and that he failed field sobriety tests.
