A calm but gloomy day on Clearwater Beach was interrupted by a moment of chaos when a small waterspout came ashore and sent shade cabanas flying Friday afternoon.

Video shared on social media by the Clearwater Police Department showed people screaming and running as the waterspout moved from the Gulf of Mexico onto the shore and wind whipped across the sand. Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes, but form over water.

It happened around 4 p.m. near Tower 2 on the southern portion of Clearwater Beach, according to police.

Two beach-goers from Kansas, a 70-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man, were hit by flying debris and were treated by lifeguards before being taken to Morton Plant Hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
