A man was shot to death during a child custody exchange on Thursday in Polk County, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident occurred just after noon Thursday at a home on Ewell Road outside of Lakeland. The man who was shot is the father of a boy who is almost 2 years old. The man was there with his mother to retrieve the boy, Polk sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies said the man was shot to death by the boyfriend of the child’s mother. The boy’s mother was not there when it happened, deputies report.

Nobody else was injured and no arrests have yet been reported. Deputies are working to determine what led to the shooting, but said they don’t expect to release more information about the situation today.

None of the people involved were named by the sheriff’s office on Thursday.
