Tampa man arrested after dispute leads to shooting

The wounded man had been involved in past arguments with Benjamin Franklin Sims Jr., police said. But on Friday it led to gunfire.

TAMPA — A 51-year-old man was arrested early Friday after Tampa police said he entered a home, shot a man and then tried to shoot a woman.

Benjamin Franklin Sims Jr. faces two counts of attempted murder and charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, armed burglary of a dwelling and carrying a concealed firearm.

The incident took place at about 3:42 a.m. in the 900 block E. Poinsettia Ave.

There was an altercation outside the front door, police said, when Sims shot a man. The wounded man ran back into the home to get away from Sims, but police said he chased him inside. A woman inside intervened, but police said Sims shot at her as he ran out the back door. He missed.

When police arrived they started treating the gunshot victim. Officers pulled Sims over soon after the shooting and arrested him.

Tampa police did not release the name of the man and woman who were attacked. But they knew Sims, police said, and the wounded man and Sims had argued with each other in the past.

The wounded man was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he was treated and released later Friday. Sims was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where he was being held without bail.
