MANGO — A woman was killed early Saturday after being struck by a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy cruiser while crossing Williams Road just north of East Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Deputy Andrew Hagenberger was headed to assist another officer with a traffic stop at about 2 a.m. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Marissa Berry, 22, stepped into Williams Road in front of the deputy’s path.

The report stated that Hagenberger was driving 55 mph in a 45 mph zone. It further noted that detectives attributed the incident to several factors, including a lack of lighting on the roadway, Berry’s dark clothing and Berry standing in the middle of the roadway.

Berry was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hagenberger has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office since September 2017. He reportedly had no other crashes in his record with the department.

Detectives continue to investigate, and did not expect to release any additional information this weekend. The Sheriff’s Office made no mention of any charges being filed at this point.
