A Largo woman was arrested on an animal cruelty charge this week after police said she locked three sick dogs in cages, where they died.

Jasmin Halkic was arrested Monday. Arrest reports state that she was “entrusted care” of two pit bulls and a chihuahua, though more details of how that came about were not provided.

However, Halkic knew the dogs were sick or that they became sick while in her care. The sickness included vomiting, diarrhea and lack of appetite. She “kept the animals locked away in cages and at some point stopped caring for their basic needs,” arrest reports state.

All three dogs were found in “different stages of decomposition and surrounded by fecal matter," the reports state.

Halkic was booked at the Pinellas County Jail and bail was set at $5,000. She was released after posting bail late Tuesday night

An assistant public defender has been appointed to represent Halkic and a not guilty plea has been entered on her behalf, court records show.
