Deputies said that at about 3:20 p.m., the sheriff’s helicopter spotted Luke Carl Niemi, 23, of Minocqua, Wis., going 145 mph, which they noted in a report was “with total disregard for safety of the defendant and other vehicles on the roadway.”

Niemi was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County jail on a charge of reckless driving and bail was set at $250. He posted bail and was released just after midnight Friday.

Details about how deputies on the ground caught up to him were not available Friday.
