A driver suspected of causing a fatal crash and leaving the scene earlier this month in St. Petersburg has been jailed in Tennessee, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Keith Eric White, 38, turned his Hyundai Accent into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist on Feb. 8 at 5th Avenue S and 37th Street S, police said. The motorcyclist, 24-year-old Brendan Markeith Hawkins, hit the side of the car. Though he was wearing a helmet, he later died of his injuries at an area hospital.

Police said tips helped them identify the car as belonging to White, and detectives found his car and issued an arrest warrant. Sheriff’s deputies in Shelby County, which contains Memphis, took him into custody Sunday.

White will be extradited to Pinellas County, police said. It’s unclear what charges he’ll face.
