The robber fled on foot after taking cash in the late Sunday holdup at a Sunoco gas station and store.

PLANT CITY — A store clerk had just opened the cash register and had his hands in the air Sunday when a masked robber shot him in the face and fled on foot, according to Plant City police.

The holdup took place at about 11:50 p.m. Sunday at the Sunoco gas station and store at 2911 James L. Redman Parkway and Charlie Griffin Road, police said.

The clerk was hospitalized and remains in serious condition.

The robber entered the store, produced a handgun, and ordered the clerk to open the cash register, police said. The armed robber, face covered, wore a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves and a black hat.

The clerk opened the register and the robber collected some of the cash. As the clerk was standing by with his hands in the air, police said, the robber abruptly shot him in the face.
