A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred on Ethel Street in Gibsonton last week, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say that Devonte Medina-Hightower was the man behind the killing. He was already in custody in charges of llegal possession of a firearm and violation of probation when investigators say they tied last week’s murder to him.
“My heart goes out to the man who suffered greatly during his final breaths,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a statement.
The name and age of the murder victim were not released by officials, just that he was an adult male. Deputies said in a release last week that they did not believe the murder was a random act.
Medina-Hightower remains in custody at the Orient Road Jail.
“I commend our homicide detectives for their diligence and dedication to make the arrest, and hopefully bring some level of closure to the victim’s family and friends," Chronister said. "This suspect’s acts are despicable, and he will be charged to the fullest extent.”
