RIVERVIEW — A 23-year-old Gibsonton man was arrested Tuesday after a 2-year-old boy died in his care last month, Hillsborough County deputies said.
David Vasquez Malave was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse. He is being held in the Hillsborough County jail without bail.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a 911 call at about 9:15 a.m. on July 19 about an unresponsive child in Riverview whose body was covered in lacerations and bruises. Deputies said the child had been in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, Vasquez Malave, and was taken to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries described at the time as “unexplained.”
The boy was pronounced dead the following day. The Medical Examiner’s office declared his death a homicide.
The Sheriff’s Office has yet to publicly name the child or the child’s mother. But according to limited details released by the Department of Children and Families, there was an open investigation involving the boy’s younger sibling at the time of his death.
