PLANT CITY — An 18-year-old Plant City man was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal collision Monday night that happened while he was racing another driver, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
David Salomon Guevara was driving a yellow 2018 Ford Mustang on State Road 60 near Cassels Road about 10:25 p.m. when he collided with the car he was racing, a black 2015 Mercedes-Benz C250 driven by Stevenson Kirby Louis Jeune, 33, of North Lauderdale, according to an arrest report.
Jeune was killed in the crash, the report said.
Both cars were headed east on the four-lane, divided highway when they began racing. Guevara was traveling at an extreme rate of speed, changing lanes of travel and nearly colliding with a third vehicle, the report said.
He lost control of his car and collided with Jeune’s car, sending both cars onto the south shoulder. Guevara’s car hit an embankment, kept traveling and east and overturned onto its roof. Jeune’s car rotated until it came to rest on the south shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Guevara, of 4030 Turkey Creek Road in Plant City, received serious injuries in the crash. The driver of the third vehicle saw him exit from the rear of the Mustang and later identified him. Guevara was arrested at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday at Brandon Regional Hospital, 3065 James L. Redman Pkwy., on charges of vehicular homicide, racing and reckless driving.
He was booked into jail about an hour later. His occupation was listed as self-employed construction worker.
At the time of the crash, Guevara was out on pretrial release following his arrest June 29 on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
