Pinellas woman arrested on DUI-manslaughter charge in crash that killed scooter rider

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said she ran a red light before hitting and killing a man riding a scooter.

A Pinellas Park woman has been arrested on a DUI-manslaughter charge in connection with a Tuesday afternoon crash in which a scooter rider was killed, Florida Highway Patrol troopers report.

Kaitlyn Ann Sauer, 28, was arrested after the crash, which occurred about 1:22 p.m. Tuesday at 66th Street and 54th Avenue N in Pinellas County, troopers said.

Sauer was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer south on 66th Street, troopers said, when she ran a red light at 54th Avenue and hit the scooter. The man riding the scooter, identified in court records as 64-year-old Stanley Joseph Mercier, died at the scene. Troopers said he was riding a 2018 Kymco scooter east on 54th Avenue and had a green light when he was hit.

Troopers wrote in an arrest report that Sauer admitted to taking heroin and Xanax before the crash.

She also was arrested on charges of drug possession and violating probation on a previous burglary charge, records show.
