Hillsborough deputies fired on while investigating armed robbery, assault

RUSKIN — Three males were arrested after a man was beaten and robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday night and the Hillsborough deputies sent to the scene were fired on, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place about 8:30 p.m. at a home in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue NE. A man went to the home and ended up being beaten and robbed at gunpoint by residents there, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The man ran away and reported the incident to a Sheriff’s Office substation. The agency did not release his name.

Deputies were sent to the scene. When they arrived, the agency says they heard several gunshots fired toward them from the house. The deputies took cover, announced that they were law enforcement officers and ordered the occupants of the house to come outside.

Two males, 20-year-old Gerardo Rios and a 17-year-old, exited the house. No deputies were injured in the incident.

The deputies said that inside the house they found an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle, a 40mm pistol and marijuana. They also said they found bullet holes in the mailbox post. But the agency did not say which weapons were used or how many rounds were fired.

The 17-year-old faces six counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and one count each of robbery with a firearm and petit theft. The name of the 17-year-old is being withheld by the Tampa Bay Times because of his age.

A third man, Isaiah Hernandez, 30, took part in the robbery but wasn’t located Wednesday night, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was pulled over Thursday and arrested. Hernandez was arrested on charges of robbery with a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and petit theft.

Rios was being held in the Hillsborough County jail late Thursday without bail. Hernandez was being held in lieu of $35,500 bail. It was not known where the 17-year-old was being held.
