TAMPA — The public is invited to attend funeral services Tuesday for Hillsborough County sheriff’s Cpl. Brian LaVigne, who was killed the day before his retirement when his patrol car was rammed by another car.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. and a funeral service for 11 a.m. at Idlewild Baptist Church, near Dale Mabry Highway and Van Dyke Road in Lutz, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Following the service, guests will be directed outside the church for a special ceremony and procession.
Idelwild is one of the largest worship centers in Florida with seating for 5,000. The church has hosted funerals for slain law enforcement officers in the past.
Usually, masks are not required as long as people are social distancing at the church, according to its website. But face coverings will be required for LaVigne’s funeral, the sheriff’s news release said.
LaVigne was killed Monday night in Brandon when a man being chased by deputies deliberately rammed his patrol car, the Sheriff’s Office said. The driver, Travis Zachary Garrett, 28, remained hospitalized Wednesday and was ordered held without bail on a murder charge.
LaVigne served 30 years with the Sheriff’s Office. He was a husband and father of two adult children, one a Hillsborough sheriff’s deputy.
