ST. PETERSBURG — A 21-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition and a 14-year-old girl wounded after someone shot into the car they were sitting in Tuesday night, police say.

The man and the teen, who are acquaintances, met near Westminster Community Playground at 5200 Fourth Ave. S, according to St. Petersburg police. The girl got into the man’s car, officers believe, then someone approached and fired gunshots into the car.

The man drove away from the shooting scene and stopped a few blocks away, near 4900 Second Ave. S, where officers arrived about 9:50 p.m.

The girl had already left the car. A friend dropped her off at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital at about 10:20 p.m., where she was treated for a gunshot wound and later released.

St. Petersburg police ask for anyone with information about the shooting to call 727-893-7780 or text “SPPD” and the information to TIP411.
