A man and woman riding on a motorcycle were shot and injured while crossing the Howard Frankland Bridge early Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The shots were fired about 12:30 a.m. by someone inside a passing black car, troopers said.

The victims, a 40-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, are both from Clearwater. They were riding north across the bridge, from St. Petersburg to Tampa, on a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Both were taken to a hospital.

A news release sent by troopers just after 4 a.m. did not indicate whether the shooting is believed to be random.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Highway Patrol at 813-558-1800.
