TAMPA — A passenger died when a man driving under the influence ran a red light and crashed into a tree early Friday in north Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
The driver, Taylor Silva, 21, of Riverview, was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The 2:30 a.m. crash slowed traffic for several hours at the scene of the crash, Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Bearss Avenue.
The crash occurred as Silva was headed east on Bearss approaching a red light at Bruce B. Downs. He drove his blue Hyundai Santa Fe onto the median, through the red light and across the intersection before the car swerved and the passenger side struck a tree, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue used extrication equipment to remove the passenger. The passenger was taken to a hospital and died there.
The Sheriff’s Office provided no information about the passenger. Silva’s occupation was listed as “unemployed” on jail booking records.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (813) 247-0526.
