Two motorcyclists were killed in a crash on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred about 3 p.m. Sunday as both motorcyclists were “traveling east at a high rate of speed,” according to a news release from the Clearwater Police Department.

One of the motorcyclists “slammed into the rear of an eastbound Hyundai Sonata,” police said. The impact pushed the Sonata, which was in the median lane and was being driven at the speed limit, into the curb lane, where it collided with the other motorcyclist, police said.

One of the motorcyclists, a 51-year-old Tampa man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, a 26-year-old Valrico man, was taken by medical helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, where he also died.

The driver of the Sonata was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell were closed for several hours as police investigated.

No other details were immediately released, though police said their investigation remains in progress.
