Two teens are facing murder charges after a botched robbery resulted in the death of a 17-year-old in Largo early Monday, police said.

Shortly after midnight on Monday, the Largo Police Department, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Pinellas Park Police Department received multiple 911 calls about a shooting in the area of 126th Avenue North and 66th Street North, the Largo Police Department said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they found Carlos Medina, 17, with multiple gunshot wounds outside the Charleston on 66 apartment complex, Largo police Chief Mike Loux said during a news conference Wednesday. Loux said Medina had been shot at least three times.

Officers rendered aid to Medina and he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Officers with the Pinellas Park Police Department found a second juvenile with multiple gunshot wounds several blocks west on 126th Avenue North. Loux did not release the juvenile’s name but said he was about 16 years old. The teen was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and officers also found a gun near the scene, the news release states.

Detectives learned that Medina and another teen, Jonathan Garcia, 15, were involved in a botched robbery that was orchestrated by Medina’s sister, Thalia Medina, 15.

Loux said Thalia Medina was hanging out with a group of teens traveling between the apartment complex and the nearby Sky Zone Trampoline Park. While they were together, Thalia Medina was providing her brother and Garcia updates on their location in an attempt to set up a robbery.

“The goal was for Carlos and Jonathan to rob the juvenile of a firearm that he was carrying,” Loux said.

Around 12:07 a.m., Medina and Garcia confronted the other teen and attempted to rob him for the gun, Loux said. Medina and Garcia were both carrying 9mm Glock handguns.

“This attempt resulted in a shootout where both Carlos and the victim were shot,” Loux said.

Medina fell to the sidewalk at the scene, and the other teen who was shot fled south, where the Pinellas Park police ultimately found him.

During the shootout, a stray round hit the windshield of a passing car on 66th Street North, Loux said. The driver was not injured but was hospitalized for a panic attack, Loux said.

Loux said police were still looking into whether the guns used in the robbery were stolen.

Garcia is facing a charge of second-degree murder in Medina’s death and a charge of attempted first-degree murder in the robbery. Thalia Medina is facing a charge of second-degree murder in her brother’s death.
