ST. PETERSBURG ― A 15-year-old freshman at Lakewood High School was arrested Monday on allegations that he threatened to “shoot up the class,” according to police.

The student shouted the threat out loud in front of a class, police said. The school resource officer was alerted to the incident.

The student was then arrested on a charge of making a false report to use a firearm in a violent manner, police said.

“(The) St. Petersburg Police Department worked with our school to investigate and quickly handle the situation,” principal Erin Savage said in a robocall sent to parents. “We take safety seriously and will thoroughly investigate any concern to ensure the security of our school.”

Police did not release the name of the student or say if the student had the means to carry out such a threat or access to firearms.
