The big story: Hurricane Ian slammed southwest Florida, bigger and stronger and farther south than expected.
Schools canceled classes in advance of the storm, making room for evacuation shelters and giving families time to prepare.
Now Ian is across Florida, as a tropical storm. Will classes resume as quickly as they halted?
Officials said they’d like to get back to education as soon as possible. But it’s not certain it can happen by Monday. Several factors are at play.

Other school news
The Volusia County school district purchased metal detectors for all its high schools. School Board members said they intend to have these in place at events only, and not for daily use, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.
The Miami-Dade County school district long has faced skepticism about its alternatives for students facing suspension. Officials have now placed the Student Success Centers on hiatus amid a review of all student discipline policies, WLRN reports.
The Miami-Dade district no longer is the fourth largest in the nation. It’s third, Chalkbeat reports. Only New York City and Los Angeles have more students.
A Palm Beach County high school teacher was cleared in court of any wrongdoing in taking $24,000 from the district. The School Board fired her days later, and she’s fighting back, the Palm Beach Post reports.
The College of Central Florida wants to keep its nursing students in Citrus County. It’s working with a local hospital to secure a multimillion-dollar state grant to support the effort, the Citrus County Chronicle reports.
From the court docket ... A former Duval County elementary school teacher, who’s also the son of a past mayor, was sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges, the Florida Times-Union reports.
