They rejected suggestions to prevent schools from making large, budget-boosting tuition increases, saying the state should not control private school operations.

Superintendents: The Hernando County School Board narrowly defeated a no-confidence motion in superintendent John Stratton, following about six hours of often angry public comment about the district, which lately has attracted national attention over its disputes. Book challenges: A Flagler County high school committee decided to keep the book “The Upside of Unrequited” on its shelves. For the year, 57% of books challenged in the district were removed, Flagler Live reports. • The Brevard County School Board is considering whether to again revise its challenged book review process, Florida Today reports.
Security: A newly released state audit indicates the Miami-Dade County school district had several safety and security deficits to address, Florida Politics reports. • The Broward County School Board delayed a vote to require clear backpacks in schools, the Sun-Sentinel reports.
New laws: Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a measure expanding an early education music literacy program, Florida Politics reports. • DeSantis also signed a bill making it easier for out-of-state teachers to transfer their certification to Florida, Florida Politics reports.
New College: Trustees are poised to change New College’s school mascot, the News Service of Florida reports.
