ST. PETERSBURG — An 18-year-old Lakewood High student was arrested Wednesday after police say he brought a machete to campus and hid it in a trombone case.

Daquan Maybell told St. Petersburg police he brought the 28-inch machete to school because he was going to do yard work immediately after school. Another student discovered the weapon when he opened a trombone case to use the instrument.

Maybell was arrested at Lakewood High, 1400 54th Ave S, by St. Petersburg police school resource officers. He was charged with possession of a weapon on school property, a felony charge.

A female student was also arrested Wednesday for bringing a small knife to campus. St. Petersburg police could not provide any more information.

These mark the fourth and fifth times this school year a weapon was found on campus.

Police last month arrested a student who brought a pellet gun to campus after a teacher learned of a photo of the student holding the gun on social media. In a separate January incident, three teens were arrested after police said two of them took selfies with a stolen handgun in a school restroom, then posted the photos to social media.

In August, police said a St. Petersburg officer found a loaded .22-caliber, four-shot revolver tucked inside the waistband of a 15-year-old student who was then arrested on a felony charge.
