Pinellas school news: Acceptance period for special programs ends Wednesday

Published Feb. 4, 2016

The deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 10, for Pinellas County families to accept an invitation to a magnet program, fundamental school or high school career academy. Families need to log into the district's Student Reservation System, the same website they used when applying for programs last month. They may accept one invitation. Those who get an invitation and don't accept it during the acceptance period will have their applications voided. Once a program's invitation is accepted, the student's name will be removed from all other lists, including waiting lists, except the Center for Gifted Studies. Families can change their selection before midnight Wednesday, and they don't need to accept waiting list spots. For more information, visit pcsb.org/choice or call the student assignment office at (727) 588-6210.

Need college financial aid? You have to apply via FAFSA

A new analysis by NerdWallet found that U.S. high school graduates missed out on up to $2.7 billion in federal grant money last school year, primarily because of incomplete or unsubmitted Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms. Of more than 1.4 million graduates who didn't fill out the FAFSA, nearly 750,000 would have been eligible for a federal Pell grant, the analysis found. Florida students left nearly $1.7 million on the table, the fourth largest total in the nation.
