Special assignment request deadline is April 21; elementary lunch menus

There's Still time to ask for school outside your zone

Parents who would like their children to attend a school other than their zoned school in 2014-15 can make a special assignment request through April 21. They must apply using the Student Reservation System at Those without a password and User ID to get into the system can get them by visiting any school in the district. To apply for a special assignment, students — including incoming kindergarteners and other new students — must first be registered at a school. Eckerd student wins Goldwater scholarship

Colleen O'Brien, an Eckerd College junior, has been awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, established by Congress in 1986 to support students pursuing careers in science, math and engineering. O'Brien is majoring in marine science and biochemistry. She will spend this summer in Beaufort, N.C., studying how salt marshes respond to sea level rise. After graduation, she plans to pursue graduate work in oceanography and hopes to conduct research in marine biochemistry.

Elementary school lunch menus

Monday: Meatball sub, chicken egg rolls, farmer's salad, oriental vegetables, salad.

Tuesday: Student Involvement Day.

Wednesday: Beef dippers with rice, orange chipotle chicken with rice, yogurt parfait, seasoned black beans, salad.

Thursday: Giorgio cheesy bread with marinara, breakfast for lunch, chicken Caesar salad, deli roasted potatoes.

Friday: No school: Professional Development Day.
