SPC invites families to learn about college financial aid

St. Petersburg College will host an event to acquaint parents and students with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, a required form for families seeking financial aid for college. FAFSA Night will be held Thursday at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School on the SPC Gibbs Campus, 6605 Fifth Ave. N in St. Petersburg. There will be two sessions, one from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and the other from 6-8 p.m. The event is open to Pinellas County high school seniors and their parents, as well as current college students.

Events outline application process for Pinellas choice schools

The process begins soon for families who want to explore Pinellas County's school choice options for the 2019-20 academic year. Before applying for a magnet, fundamental or career program, parents can attend a workshop to find out about the application process. The event will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Countryside High, 3000 State Road 580 in Clearwater. Also planned are three Choice Fairs, where parents and students can find out about each program and speak to a program representative. The fairs will be held from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 1 at Gibbs High, 850 34th St. S, St. Petersburg; 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 3 at Largo High, 410 Missouri Ave. N; and 6-8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Dunedin High, 1651 Pinehurst Rd. The application period for choice programs is Jan. 9-18. For more information, call the school district's Student Assignment office at (727) 588-6210 or sign up at pcsb.org/choice to receive reminders.

The week kicks off with a game of manhunt from 8-10 p.m. Sunday on the harbor lawn. On Monday, a block party dubbed Monte Carnabull will block off Second Street outside the student center from 7-10 p.m. The homecoming ball will be held from 8-11 p.m. Tuesday in the student center ballroom, followed by a powderpuff football game from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday on the recreation field. On Thursday, from 5-8 p.m., teams will compete in a cardboard boat race on the campus waterfront. And on Friday, students are invited to the first annual Homecoming Night Market featuring live music, food trucks, student art and other vendors on Harborwalk. The week culminates with Saturday’s football game at Raymond James Stadium between the USF Bulls and the University of Connecticut.
