A 12-foot-long beached pilot whale appeared on the shore of Point of Rocks Beach in Siesta Key early Friday morning, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they received calls before 3 a.m. about the large whale and then called the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, which is now working to remove it.

It's unclear what caused the whale's death.

A Knoxville-based WBIR reporter, who was on the beach Friday, shared video of the whale on Twitter.
