How Florida Republicans voted on Marjorie Taylor Greene

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested space laser beams started the California wildfires.

She questioned whether Flight 77 really crashed into the Pentagon during 9/11.

And she asserted that the 2018 Parkland massacre that left 17 dead was fake.

These comments and more convinced three South Florida Republicans to join Democrats in voting against her on Thursday. It was a rare breach in a united GOP front that’s stood behind Donald Trump and his acolytes since the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

All of Florida’s congressional Democrats voted Thursday on approving a resolution that would strip Greene of her committee assignments — the Budget Committee and the Education and Labor Committee.

The surprise came when they were joined by Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar, three Republicans from Miami-Dade County, a blue part of the state with a large Jewish population.

“As I have repeatedly criticized (U.S. Rep.) Ilhan Omar for her anti-Semitic comments, I had to hold Marjorie Greene accountable for her denial of the Parkland massacre, the Flight 77 crash, and accusing a Jewish family of starting the California wildfires,” Salazar said in a tweet.

Overall, the resolution passed by a vote of 230 to 199. Eight other Republicans voted with Democrats to punish Greene.

Every other member of Florida’s GOP caucus (including Tampa Bay’s Gus Bilirakis, Scott Franklin and Vern Buchanan) showed their firm support of Greene, their latest high-profile affirmation of Trump and his supporters. Last month, they overwhelmingly voted against the certification of the election results and Trump’s second impeachment.
