Florida updates list of gas stations affected by Citgo fuel contamination

Some of the gas stations initially flagged by the state as having possibly received contaminated gas have now been cleared, while two new gas stations have been added to the list of those affected.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced on Sunday that more than two dozen Citgo gas stations around the state may have received contaminated gas mixed with diesel fuel that could harm or disable engines. On Tuesday, the agency said that six stations did not receive the contaminated fuel, and eight other stations have been inspected, remediated and cleared. Seventeen stations were on a “stop sale” order from the state.

Rogers Petroleum, at 134 N Desoto Ave. in Arcadia, was added to the state’s most recent list, and remained under a stop-sale order as of Tuesday.

The state also newly identified PJI LLC, at 7977 W Dunnellon Road in Dunnellon, as having been affected. At PJI, regular and premium fuel were not contaminated, only diesel fuel, the state said. The state said that station has already been inspected and cleared for fuel sales.

Aaron Keller, a spokesperson with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, said that Citgo provided the department with an update that included the two stations, which is why they were not previously listed.

Customers who purchased gas after 10 a.m. Saturday may have been affected. (The updated list of stations is at the bottom of this story.)

Citgo told the Tampa Bay Times on Monday that it discovered contaminated gas at the Port Tampa Bay terminal on Saturday as a result of a “product routing issue” and ordered a shutdown of the fuel “rack,” or pipeline, that was mixing the diesel fuel with gasoline. The company said it is conducting a “full investigation” but has yet to provide any details about the investigation.

Consumers who bought fuel from one of the affected gas stations on or after Saturday can begin a claim at: www.citgo.com/contact-us.

Florida officials also opened a hotline to receive complaints from people who believe they bought the bad fuel. People can call 1-800-435-7352 or make a complaint at fdacs.gov.

“It is never good to have such a catastrophic error for consumers, but particularly during a time when Floridians are evacuating from a potentially dangerous storm,” Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson said in a statement Tuesday, referencing Hurricane Idalia. “I firmly believe our department was able to mitigate what could have been a worse situation. We stand ready to assist those whose vehicles and equipment were impacted by contaminated fuel.”
