AMC Theatres, the nation’s largest movie chain, is reopening next week, including five locations in the Tampa Bay area on Aug. 20, with 15-cent movies for opening day.
And Regal Cinemas, the second largest chain, is to reopen some U.S. locations on Aug. 21, including movie theaters in Pinellas Park, Largo and Tampa.
AMC has reopened theaters in many of its overseas locations, but the movie houses have remained closed in the U.S. since March. It plans to open more than 100 U.S. theaters next Thursday and the 15-cent ticket deal is said to commemorate its centennial, offering “movies in 2020 at 1920 prices” on opening day.
The theaters say they have instituted new cleaning measures, and will keeping the venues at limited capacity so guests can social distance. Both employees and audience members will be required to wear masks.
The 15-cent movies offered that day will be classics like Grease and the Goonies. Other classics such as Back to the Future and Ghostbusters will be offered the rest of the weekend for $5. See the lineup at amctheatres.com/movies.
AMC announced that it expects to open two-thirds of its more than 600 U.S. theater locations by the time Christopher Nolan’s thriller Tenet hits theaters on Sept. 3.
The five AMC locations opening in the Tampa Bay area are AMC West Shore 14 at Tampa’s Westshore Plaza, Highwoods 20, 18002 Highwoods Preserve Parkway, Tampa; Veterans 24 at 9302 Anderson Road, Tampa; the Woodlands Square 20, 3128 Tampa Road, Oldsmar; and the Regency 20, 2496 W Brandon Blvd., Brandon.
The AMC Sundial theater won’t open until Aug. 28. and AMC Classic in Palm Harbor on Sept. 3.
Regal will open its theaters Aug. 21 at Regal Park Place, 7200 U.S. 19 N, Pinellas Park; at the Largo Mall, and at Citrus Park Town Center in Tampa. The Regal Hollywood theater in Port Richey isn’t set to open until Aug. 28.
The Russell Crowe psychological thriller Unhinged will be the biggest movie to open that weekend, which will also have an Inception 10th anniversary screening, the teen romance Words on Bathroom Walls and the New Orleans gangster film Cut Throat City produced by Forest Whitaker.
