Florida coronavirus deaths top 12,000 as state adds 2,564 cases

Coronavirus deaths in Florida surpassed 12,000 on Sunday, as the state added 38 deaths and 2,564 cases.

At least four other states have recorded more deaths, including New York, New Jersey, California and Texas. The weekly death average in Florida is about 105 people per day.

The total number of cases across the state is 646,431.

Hospitalizations: Currently, 3,163 people in Florida are hospitalized due to COVID-19, according to the Agency for Healthcare Administration website. Of those cases, 517 are in Tampa Bay.

In mid-July, hospitalizations peaked, nearing 10,000 cases across the state.

In Florida, around 29 percent of hospital beds and about 27 percent of ICU beds are available. About 37 percent of hospital beds and 22 percent of ICU beds remain open in Tampa Bay.

Positivity: The World Health Organization advises regions to maintain a positivity rate of 5 percent or less for two weeks in order to reopen safely.

According to John Hopkins University, Florida’s average weekly positivity is 13.2 percent. The Florida Department of Health said the positivity rate has ranged from 4.9 percent to 7.49 percent over the past two weeks. It does not include positive retests in calculating these numbers, instead emphasizing negative retests.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay reported an additional four deaths and 453 cases Sunday.

Hillsborough County added three deaths, while Pinellas reported one death.

According to the most recent counts, Hillsborough County has reported 38,426 cases and 567 deaths; Pinellas has reported 20,425 cases and 675 deaths; Polk has reported 17,799 cases and 471 deaths; Manatee has reported 10,656 cases and 268 deaths; Pasco has reported 8,316 cases and 184 deaths, Hernando has reported 2,788 cases and 100 deaths and Citrus has reported 2,314 cases and 64 deaths.
