Publix will add COVID-19 vaccine appointments to the seven Hernando County stores after receiving additional doses from the state.

Publix says Citrus and Marion counties will also receive more doses. The state provided Publix with 70,000 additional doses of the Moderna vaccine, according to the Lakeland-based grocer. There will soon be a total of 242 Florida Publix stores offering the vaccine.

The vaccines are available only to those 65 and older. Publix says it will post reservation slots at starting Wednesday for appointments beginning Thursday. More slots will become available on Thursday for appointments beginning Saturday and through Jan. 27.

“We are grateful to continue our collaboration with the state of Florida and Governor DeSantis as we work to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to as many people who are eligible in our Florida communities as possible,” Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a statement. “It is our privilege to do our part during this time of crisis.”

Publix locations in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties are still not offering the vaccine. Publix has said there is not yet a timeline of when those counties may be included in the program.

DeSantis has said the Publix program was to focus first on more rural areas with large elderly populations that lacked robust hospital systems.

On Tuesday, DeSantis announced the program would grow to include Palm Beach County. DeSantis did not say which other more populated counties could be next in the Publix program, but said that it will continue to expand to include more stores.

The Hernando stores offering the vaccine are in Brooksville, Spring Hill and Week Wachee. Appointments for the vaccine must be made online.
